Generation No. 1

1.  MOSES1 SHAW.  He married CATHERINE.

Notes for MOSES SHAW:
The Shaws were Scotch-Irish and English and came to America on an English ship.  One of the brothers who came became an accomplished violinist-playing in the New York Symphony.  This branch of the family ended up in New Jersey.  From there they went to Ohio-homesteading where the city of Columbus is now located.  From Ohio they went to Wisconsin where they once again homesteaded.

Child of MOSES SHAW and CATHERINE is:
2. i. JOEL JOHN2 SHAW, b. 1810, Canisteer (Cann) NJ; d. 1892, Winfield Twnshp Osborne Cnty, KS.

Generation No. 2

2.  JOEL JOHN2 SHAW (MOSES1) was born 1810 in Canisteer (Cann) NJ, and died 1892 in Winfield Twnshp Osborne Cnty, KS.  He married MARY WHITE.

Notes for JOEL JOHN SHAW:
A letter to John and Mary Shaw in Excelsior P.O, Richland County, Wisconsin dated 16 November 1859 written by A.H. Van Houten, son-in-law of Adam Smith on behalf of  Moses and Catharine Shaw said:

Canister (NJ), Nov. 16, 1859

Dear Son and daughter,

I received your letter of July 23rd in due course of time, and was much pleased to hear that you are all well and doing well.  I am not very smart, and your mother is still failing.  David was married the 8th of last January and had one daughter.  Peter and Jane and their family are all well.  They have six children, four boys and two girls.  John Dougherty and family are well.  William Wright and his family are also well.

We have not had very good crops this fall; our corn crop is quite poor; a good deal of it was not more than half ripe.  Buckwheat a middling crop, as we have had a very cold season.  Rye and oats are good, potatoes a good yield but rotted some.

Our neighbors are generally pretty well, though some have died since I last wrote you.  Old Aunt Peggy Boyd died last spring, and old John Boyd died about the same time, and his son, William, just before him.  John Boyd died without hope in Christ, the result of procrastination.  I mention this hoping that if you have not made your peace with God you will now take warning and make Christ your refuge, let it be your fate.  And oh, my son, do remember the exhortations of your poor old father.  I may never write you again, this may be the last, and if you do forget my warnings and forget me, do not forget God.  Remember His mercy, and His love, and fear His wrath.  Be careful that you do not have to bear the awful wrath of God.  Read the eleventh Psalm and see what God says is the portion of the wicked, and of the righteous.

You know that your father is not able to write and he has therefore asked my services in writing this letter.  You will observe the great affection your father has for you; it reminds me of the Prodigal Son and his father that Christ spoke of.  Although I have never seen you, I feel I must add a little to his advice, and first I would say you should feel it a great blessing that God has given you a praying father, and you should feel it a duty to begin to praise God for this great benefit that is not bestowed on all mankind.  It appears to me your heart would break to hear his prayers as they are offered up to God in your behalf.  For my part, I have felt very thankful to God that I too had a praying father, and I feel too that your father is a parent to me, as it was he who kindly advised me how to seek pardoning grace, for it is by grace we must be saved.  Now although your father is old and decrepit, he still prays for you daily and earnestly.  I would then advise you to remember his counsel; remember "Today is the accepted time.  Now is the day of grace."

As the evening is nearly spent, we must close hoping these few lines may find you all enjoying good health, the greatest blessing God has ever conferred on man, and hoping too that you will answer this shortly with the good news that God has converted your soul and that the love of Christ has found way to your heart.

Please write again soon and we will try and answer your letter more promptly that at this time.  Receive the love of your father and mother and give our love to your children.  I will just add that your mother has so declined in life that she has become a child.  Her mind is weak, yet she still remembers you and wants to see you and your family, but does not know anyone who comes in, in fact she knows no one except your father.  He does the housework and has not time to earn anything if he was able.  Therefore you may judge his condition in life.

He remains your affectionate father and sends his love and best wishes for prosperity and happy life.

(Editor's Questions:  Could David be a brother of Joel?  Is either Peter and Jane a sibling?)

Joel (Sr.)/John must have moved his family to Osborne County Kansas around 1877.  He paid $4.00 to Homestead 160 acres on March 3, 1877.  This would have made Joel (Jr.) about eighteen years old when they moved from Wisconsin to Kansas.

Dear Children,
I will try and write you a few lines once more as it has been a long time since I have heard from you.  This is two letters since I had one from you.  What is the matter you don't write?  We are well as could be expected for people of our age.  John and family is well.  Bob and family has gone to Minnesota.  They moved from our house in September over to Henry Coles' old house and started to Minnesota in October.  We have had one letter from Bob.  They got there all right and was fixing up for the winter.  Bob didn't want to go, but he didn't see no peace.  Tint wouldn't give him no peace: he must go north.  Bob told several of the neighbors it was the hardest trial he ever net with, to go off and leave us.  John Smith came down to see them start.  He said he wished he hadn't have come when he saw Bob felt so bad.  Well, you think Tint is all right.  You may think so, but you don't know anything about her.  You and Frank is profit workers.  I didn't quarrel with he.  I never took the sass and impudence from nobody that I took from her.  She didn't think no more of disputing my word and your pop's than she did one of the children's.  Well, I can't tell you anything hardly.  Our neighbors are as good as ever.  I wish you and Mina and the children was here somewhere by.  Anyone that will work can make as good a living here as any place.  If you were here, you could help to look after us a little and not leave it all to do by John.  Bob has got through with about all he had.  Has some horses yet.  We ain't had a letter from Frank's since in July.  We have sent him two letters since that, and ain't had no answer yet.  We sent our letters to Chandler, OK (Editor's Note:  Can't make out the word after Chandler but there is some evidence that Frank went to Oklahoma and there is a Chandler in both Oklahoma and Minnesota.)   I don't know whether  he ever got them or not.    His last letter was mailed there.  We used to send them to Arcada.  (Editor's Note:  There is an Arcadia in Oklahoma.  Could this be the town?)  Well, I told him how we was left, and to see if he could help use any.  Bob never give us but fifty cents while he was here.  He came over before he went away and said he had no money to let us have.  He said it would take all he had to move on.  Warren Dilly and family went with Bob to Minnesota.  Well, my shoulder is hurting me and I will have to quit.

      Love to all.  Write soon.

(Joel/John and Mary Shaw?)

Notes from Mary Ellen Shaw from an interview with her dad-W.S. Shaw:  "The family homesteaded in Osborne County, Kansas and lived in a dugout house that had a roof of bluestem grass.  "Sunny Hill" was perhaps the name of the settlement.   Eventually they moved to Wisconsin-Mineral Point and then Excelsior, and homesteaded there and then migrated to Pittsburg, Kansas.  The Shaws settled in Pittsburg in the spring of 1898."  Olive said that they "camped out during the summer in a covered wagon on Cow Creek next to the brick yard while Dad looked for work as a carpenter."  S. E. Shaw added that Joel lost an eye.  One day while driving a nail, his hammer glanced off and the nail flew up and hit him in the eye.  They are buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg, Kansas.  Take the east road and drive to the back of the cemetery.  Their head stone is buried in the ground.

Notes for HANNAH A. (MINA) BRIERY:
Letter sent to Hannah "Mina" (Briery) Shaw to Excelsior, Wisconsin by her younger sister, Lettia.

Mansfield (Louisiana)
Sun., Jan. 21, 1894

Dear Sister,

After so long a time I take my pen in hand to try and answer your most kind and welcome letter I received some time ago.  I would have written sooner, but I didn't have no stamp to send it.  Mother (Hannah Osgood) is falling away like everything.  She would write but she doesn't feel like it.  She isn't much larger than I am.  I am worried about her all the time.  Links (oldest brother) is still living with us.  Little Nat (Nat is Lettia youngest child) is as cute as he can be.  Lincoln has got his house but the doors and windows.  I guess he would have had it done, but he hasn't the money to buy the windows.

I wish you was down here so we could make the Louisiana people open their eyes and think they ever hunted.  We would go rabbit hunting and we could take Ozzie's pistol and shoot squirrels and wild turkeys, for Ozzie say two one day.  I think you and I could find them if anybody could.

We will soon have radishes to eat now, my radishes are up nice and the plum tree is in bloom and the children fetched a handful of violets the other day.  I will have to close for this time.  Hoping to hear from you soon, I remain,
  your loving sister,   Lettia

The following letter sent to Lydia Shaw who was 9 years old by her Aunt Lettia with the above letter.

Dear little niece,

I received your letter some time ago and was glad to hear from my dear little Liddy.  Would like to see you all.  Dollie (Lettia oldest child) is larger around the waist that I am and her feet and hands is bigger than mine.  She helped me wash last week and done all of the ironing.   Nat and Charlie and Jack says they had drother have me to play with them than Dollie because Dollie is so cranky.  Well, Liddy, I suppose you are quite a big girl now.  I wish you could be with Aunt Lettia to help her gather flowers.  I suppose where you are there is snow yet, and just think, down here the flowers are in bloom.  They raise two crops of Irish potatoes here.  It will soon be time to plant all kinds of garden stuff now.  I will make garden as soon as I can get the seed.  I fetched by radish seed from Kansas, and I have beets up that I fetched the seeds down here with me.  I am going to write to Perry (Lettia brother who is two years younger than her) so I will have to close for this time.  Write soon if not sooner.

From Aunt Lettia to Liddy,  bye, bye

iii. LYDIA MARGARET SHAW, b. 12 Mar 1885, Twin Creek KS; d. 21 Aug 1900, Pittsburg KS.

Notes for LYDIA MARGARET SHAW:
Dick Shaw's notes:  One report says that Lydia died of a rattlesnake bite in Wisconsin.   Olin Evans reported that "Lydia was bitten by a rattlesnake while picking berries.  Grandpa (Joel Shaw) said they found her dead in the timber."  (DCB note:  surely confused with Louisa J. Briery, who died of a rattlesnake bite in 1877.)  Mary Ellen Shaw said, "My Dad (Warren Stephen) also told me this story but Olive Postai who was born six years before Lydia's death told me Lydia died from typhoid."  (Editor's Note:  At least we can rule out the Wisconsin location because Lydia is buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS.)

9. iv. BLANCHE PEARL SHAW, b. 09 Aug 1889, Twin Creek, KS.
10. v. JOEL OSGOOD (OZZIE) SHAW, b. 19 Dec 1891, Mabel, Daviess Co., MO; d. Jul 1971, California.

vii. MARY ETHEL SHAW, b. 25 Aug 1898, Louisburg, Dallas Co, MO; d. Dec 1899, Pittsburg KS (Mt Olive Cemetery).

Notes for MARY ETHEL SHAW:
According to Mary Ellen Shaw, June, 1998:  "A story told by Muriel Kirk to her granddaughter, Terre, recounted the birth of another baby, a girl, while the family was traveling in a covered wagon.  This must have been Ethel, born in August, 1898 at Louisburg, Dallas County, MO.  Since Ethel died "at 16 months" in 1899 and was buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg, she must have been the baby (not Olive) born in Aunt Muriel's story.   The version of the story which I saw had the names of Steve and Ozzie confused:  Steve had to be the 'big brother' and Ozzie 'the toddler'."

Notes for WARREN STEVEN SHAW:
First Home:   1105 N. Tucker, Pittsburg, Kansas  (still exists-see picture)
2nd Home:    1002 E. 8th, Pittsburg, Kansas  (Steve and his Dad, Joel, built this        house.  A duplex was standing in this spot in 1998.)
3rd Home:     Route 4 (Now Centennial Drive at the Mt. Carmel Hospital Site)
Last Home:   420 West Martin, Pittsburg, Kansas  (across from Lakeside Park.         Was no longer standing in 1998.)

Steve Shaw was a left-handed carpenter so he was good at working on the "other side" of the project.  Along with his partners, J.J. Kearns and Albert Scates, they formed the Pittsburg Construction Company.  He always planted a huge vegetable garden-potatoes, corn, tomatoes, melons, etc.  He cultivated grapes, raspberries and rhubarb and there was a big black walnut tree in the chicken pen.  Steve spent a great deal of time reading The Reader's Digest, Saturday Evening Post and the Bible while sitting on his front porch swing facing Lakeside Park.  One of his favorite desserts was "Old Grey Mule"-syrup and butter stirred together.

Notes from  Mary Ellen Shaw about her father, Warren Steven Shaw written in 1998.

"Young Steve Shaw was trained by his father to be a carpenter.  The two of them built a home for Steve, his wife and young Richard at 1002 East Eighth Street, Pittsburg, KS.  Steve and Mamie had first lived at 1105 N. Tucker in a home "prepared by the groom".  (I'm not sure if that means he built it.)  He was classified as a contractor by the time he was married.  He later built a home for the family (sometime between 1914 and 1921) on three acres "a mile-and-a-quarter east of the Catholic cemetery" (now Centennial Drive) in Pittsburg on the site where Mt. Carmel Hospital now stands.   This is the home where I was born and where we lived until 1930 when we moved to 420 West Martin, across from Lakeside Park.

"In 1924, Steve was in an automobile accident while enroute to a church conference in Emporia, KS.  He suffered a compound fracture of the skull and was in an Emporia hospital for weeks.  When he returned to Pittsburg and to work, he was not aware that the injury had impaired his ability to do detailed calculation.  He made a bid on a men's clothing store (Holden's) to be constructed in Pittsburg, but seriously underestimated his costs.  In order to fulfill the contract, he had to borrow heavily, mortgaging the three-acre place.  I'm not sure what year that was, but the financial stress of the time merged into a general depression of the famous 1929 Wall Street Crash, making our personal financial depression start even before the national "Great Depression."

"We always dreaded seeing J.N. Patmore drive up to our house, because he was the bank collector, asking about delinquent payments on the mortgage.  Even though those were hard times, we had certain amenities.  Before "The Accident" the family car was a Studebaker, the living room had a crank-up phonograph and a "player piano" in it, and the bookcase had some good books, including a twenty-volume set of "The Child's Book of Knowledge" (excellent entertainment for a little country girl, and a good reference material for the boys' school assignments).

"Steve loved to joke and tell stories, as did Mamie, so there were many light moments even though worries took an emotional toll.  He would hold a kid on his lap and read aloud, or sing funny old songs.  That was on the three-acre place.  The light-heartedness disappeared as the Depression wore on and he was unable to find carpenter work to do at union wages.  He had been a strong union man in the days when they were first organized, and always refused to take a non-union job, which commitment made it hard for him to find work in Depression days.  People could not afford to pay union wages for small carpentry jobs.  Mamie had to take on work outside the home: housecleaning, washing and ironing to make ends meet.  This circumstance didn't make for good relations between them, for she thought he should give up his "stubborn insistence on union wages."  The family car was no longer a Studebaker, just one decrepit used car after another, one of which he drove west, looking for work until he got to California.  He was little more successful there than he had been in Kansas, and about a year later, he drove back to Pittsburg, rattling over the last few miles "on the rim", having ruined a tire and having no money with which to replace it.

"Franklin Roosevelt's relief program, "Works Progress Administration", provided him with some opportunity for work and certain food supplies for the family, providing sustenance, but eating at his pride.  I can't recall his ever having a really good job ever again.  When he was in his late sixties, he served two or three years as caretaker at Lakeside Park.  Mamie died in October, 1954, and he soon disposed of the house on West Martin, moving first to a rooming house, and then to a nursing home where he died in July, 1966.  I was serving in Guatemala during those years, but was able to visit him in '58, '59, '61, '64 and '65.  Though his memory was failing, he still loved to joke and tell stories.  I loved his attitude and am grateful for those times with him."

(Editor's Note:  I remember some of the songs he sang to me, "Go Tell Aunt Groddy That the Old Grey Goose Is Dead".  I also remember jumping out of one of those "decrepit used cars", my leg slipped under the car and the right rear tire ran over my right ankle-didn't break it.  When he was caretaker of Lakeside Park, I remember going to the "shower house" with him and "taking a shower"-before this experience I had only had baths.  Additionally, I remember Grandpa moving out to Grants Pass, Oregon right after Grandmother died and living in a house out behind the one Joe and Mickey Shaw lived in.  This didn't work out-he was a stubborn man who had a mind of his own-so he moved back to Pittsburg,  I also remember him living in the YMCA for a while when I was a student at Rockhurst College.  Whenever I came home, I tried to go visit him.  Since he loved walking around downtown, I often ran into him there.  While in college, Mother (Jessie Shaw) sent me a letter around March 7th telling me that she bet I forgot to send Grandpa something for his birthday. . .but not to worry because she took him a box of Cherry Chocolates and a five dollar bill and told him it was "from us".  I wrote back to Mother and indicated that she probably was adding to Grandpa's confusion because he probably remembered it being warm on his birthday and either eating "chip chocolate" ice cream from Picco (Pittsburg Ice Cream Company) or watermelon.   You see, his birthday was August 7.)

Notes for MAMIE MATZENBACHER:
Mamie (Matzenbacher) Shaw was a homemaker.  She was an excellent cook and canned many of the vegetables from the family garden.  She was very active in her church, the Evangelical United Brethren.

Notes from  Mary Ellen Shaw about her mother, Mamie (Matzenbacher) Shaw written in 1998.

"Note from the 'Society Page' of the Pittsburg, KS, newspaper (date not known).   Miss Mayme Metzenbar (sic) and W. S. Shaw, both of this city, were united in marriage last Saturday afternoon* by Probate Judge Jones in his office at Girard.  They returned to this city in the evening and were given a banquet or wedding supper in honor of the event by the parents of the groom.  The young couple have already begun housekeeping at a home that was prepared by the groom at 1105 North Tucker Avenue.  The bride is one of Pittsburg's highly esteemed young ladies and the groom is a young contractor who is making his way in his work  and is well liked by all of this acquaintances."  *Date of wedding:  April 14, 1906.

"This highly esteemed young lady" had been working as housekeeper in the home of a prominent Pittsburg banker, Mr. A. K. Lanyon, a widower living with his mother and young daughter, Rosalie, who was also somewhat in Mamie's charge.  Mamie was the oldest daughter in a family of nine children, and knew what it was to carry heavy household duties and take care of children.  She had only an eighth grade education, but made good use of what she had been taught; her use of the English language was admirable and her comportment equally so.  She often coached her children in what was called "expression" so they were able to do well in public speaking and recitation.  She was witty and light-hearted, often breaking into a solo dance when a schottiche would pour out of the radio.  Until she was past forty, she lived in an era when all laundry was done by hand and ironing of sheets, shirts and overalls was done with flatirons heated on a wood stove.  Then came the day when she had a washer and an upright pole attached in such a way as to operate the agitator.  The youngest children had the privilege of working the pole back and forth while Mamie tended to the copper boiler in which she boiled the sheets and other white pieces in lye water.  Her laundry sparkled.  (Editor's Note:  I remember accidentally slipping into that copper boiler-after it had cooled off-and getting soaked.  For some reason I remember Grandma giving me a pair of  Aunt Mary's "pink pants" to wear around the house while my clothes dried on the clothes line.  Ouch!)

"Always a hard worker, she often worked out of the home during the depression years to help keep food on the table.  She was a good cook, and the boys' friends always liked to come to the Shaws' house for meals and treats.  She loved her church and was active in church work all her married life.  When her only daughter
went to the foreign mission field, it wrenched her heart, but she was proud of her.  She was proud of all her children and grandchildren, and especially happy when she could celebrate a special occasion or accomplishment with them.  She died of the massive stroke in Pittsburg on October 23, 1954.  The Lord, in His mercy, allowed Mary Ellen to arrive from mission service in Guatemala in time to be by her side in her final hours.  Elmer was there too but was at home with Dad at the time of her death.  I was at the hospital with Mom, as was Helen Neuenswander, R.N.  She died at 4:00 a.m."

(Editor's Note:  In Howard Ruede's letters, he wrote:  "We arrived at the South Fork of the Solomon about noon, so we unhitched and stopped for dinner.  After giving the horses about an hour's rest we started off for Neuschwanger's near Kill Creek.  Mr. N., is a Mennonite preacher.  He and 4 of his children have their claims all in one body of land, and they all work together.  Here are 800 acres all belonging to one family."  (Sod-House Days)  Could this be a relative of Helen Neuenswander-even though the spelling is different?  Mary Ellen Shaw said that Helen's father was also a Mennonite preacher.)

 v. MARY ELLEN SHAW, b. 15 Sep 1921, Pittsburg KS.

Notes for MARY ELLEN SHAW:
Born on Route 4.

Mary Ellen went to high school in Pittsburg, worked for Montgomery Ward (Monkey Wards) and used to read children's stories on the radio.  She earned her bachelor's degree from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and her Masters degree in Language and Literature from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS and had earned an additional 25 graduate credit hours in Analytical Linguistics from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK.  She became a missionary with the Wycliffe Bible Translators in the Cubulco, Guatemala.  Along with her associate Helen Neuenswander who was a nurse and anthropologist, they translated the New Testament in to the native language of the area..  Before Mary started this project, there was no written language for this dialect.  She listened to the folk stories of the natives, developed a spelling for the words, taught them how to read the folk stories which helped them learn how to read the New Testament.  She spent most of her life (38 years) in Guatemala.

Autobiographical Notes from Mary Ellen Shaw-reluctantly provided at the request of her nephew and your editor, Richard (Dick) D. Shaw.

"After graduating from Pittsburg High, I made a little money doing sewing for other people.  Sewed for Mom and myself, of course.   My first job was in a sheet metal shop from which I was hired away by Clay Mangrum to work in the Rock Furniture Store.  I should never have tried it; didn't know how to keep books; didn't like Clay Mangrum and he didn't like me.  After that I worked in the office at Montgomery Wards-where I DID learn how to keep customer's charge accounts, the very thing Mangrum thought I couldn't do.  I also handled the paperwork for customers' application for needed plumbing and heating parts and repairs, paperwork that was processed though government offices.  In 1944 I quit to go to John Brown University for a year because someone offered to pay my way.  Got my bachelor's degree there in 1948; worked at the University for two years; went to Kansas State Teacher's College in 1950-1951 and earned a master's degree in language and literature.  Went to the University of Oklahoma in the summers of 1951 and 1952 working again at John Brown University in the school year between those summers.  Went to "Jungle Training Camp" in Chiapas, Mexico, January through March of 1953.  Went to Guatemala with Helen Neuenswander in July, 1953.  Together we analyzed the Achi (Au-chee) language and taught people to read and write in their own language.  Created reading materials for them, edited a volume of folk tales in 17 Indian languages in Central America (in both Spanish and English) including sample stories of each of the 17 contribution in their original languages with literal interlinear translations, edited the ethnographic portion of a volume presenting linguistic analyses of Mayan languages of Guatemala, and published a couple of articles in Guatemalan journals.

"Helen and I worked together at first in language learning and analysis (the language had never been written), but she soon was too busy ministering to the medical needs of the people to help with the translation.  I worked with native speakers to do the translation to the New Testament, and when I finished, Helen and I went over the entire manuscript separately and with two native speakers who had not participated in the translation, making the final corrections.  It went to the printer in 1983 and was dedicated in a public ceremony in May, 1984.  I had begun working as consultant with new translators who had begun the same type of work and continued doing that until I left the field in 1991.

"After the New Testament was completed, we began (with the help of volunteers from the U.S.) to build a hospital in Cubulco (the rural town where we had lived all those years).  We began it in November, 1984, but work was slowed because of political violence and lack of funds.  (Did I ever tell you Helen and I were on a list to be eliminated?  Communists didn't want American there doing good.)  However, in the summer of 1986 we had a total of 96 volunteers come for varying lengths of time to finish the hospital.  Unfortunately, Helen was becoming more and more ill with some undiagnosed "something."  We came to the U.S. in October and she was found to have an advanced case of Hodgkin's disease.   We stayed in the U.S. for a year while she underwent treatment, returning in October, 1987, as she was in remission.  When the disease recurred, she went under the care of an excellent oncologist in Guatemala City.  He kept the disease somewhat at bay but couldn't eradicate it.  Fortunately the Lord had someone else waiting in the wings to take over the hospital which wasn't quite finished.  A Christian service mission took it over and began ministering to those people for whom Helen had such great compassion.  Helen died January 9, 1990.  I stayed on while the transition of the hospital was made and continued translation consulting.  I stayed until my 70th birthday (9/15/91).  Then I accepted the invitation of Jewel Sundbeck and her mother to come share their home in Austin, Texas.  I'm ever grateful to God for this provision for my need.  It's been a wonderful life.

Notes for RICHARD MALBURN SHAW:
"Dick went to high school at the school operated by Kansas State Teacher College for training prospective teachers (College High School).  Result:  he was a high school kid trying to be like the college men; was sophisticated beyond his years.  Worked in a steam laundry enhancing his naturally wavy hair-good looking guy.   Never lacked for girl-friends; knew how to show them a good time.  Great personality; had lots of friends.  I don't remember where all he worked, but I best remember his working for Harry Bradley's "American Furniture Company", then at the "Rock Furniture Company" where he met Jessie (Murray).  I think he was a salesman at both those stores, but he also had the task of collecting (on accounts) for Rock (Rock Solid Value and Rock Bottom Prices).  Unpleasant as that job was, people seemed to like him even though he was calling to ask for money.  That personality again!   I forgot to mention that after high school he owned a "flivver" and a
banjo, both of which he covered with graffiti.  The car sported a sign which said "Hit me easy-I'm getting old!"  I can remember it had to be cranked by hand, and that sometimes when it was parked in the barnyard, I would sit in it and pretend to drive.  The dashboard had knows on it that said "Bat, Dim, Off/On, Mag"-but I had no idea what that meant;  still don't."

Notes for CHARLES JOEL JOE SHAW:
Lived in Grants Pass, Oregon and loved to hunt in the mountains and fish in the rivers and streams that surrounded his home.  Joe patented a device to load a boat on a camper. For many years he worked as a Assessor in Grants Pass, Oregon and before then he and Mickey spent many years in Los Angeles area.  .

Notes from Mary Ellen Shaw about her brother, Charles Joel (Joe) written in 1998.

"I think it was in 1928 that Joe, then 17, set out for California-THE man in Aunt Versa Hanes' Model "T" Ford which was to take Versa and her two kids to the west coast.  Another car was caravaning with them, that one with Uncle Terry Matzenbacher's wife and three kids.  Two other ladies went along, and some of the ladies helped drive, but Joe was the oldest male.  It took them 14 days to make the trip, the purpose of which was to get them out to Los Angeles where their husbands had gone to find work.  (Uncle Terry and Uncle Elmer Matzenbacher were working there as streetcar conductors.  They had been prepared for that, working on the interurban streetcar line that ran between Pittsburg and Joplin, Missouri.)  (Editor's Note:  This is the same Joplin-Pittsburg Railroad that the Murray girls worked for.)

"Joe stayed in Southern California and worked for an electrical manufacturing company, an then for hardware stores.  Met a cute little gal called Mickey (Wilma Lee Lucas) who was a receptionist at a movie mogul's office (20th Century Fox's Charles Skuras).  Joe and Mickey married in 1933.  Their daughter, Judy Lee, was born in 1936.  They moved to Grants Pass, Oregon in 1949 and Joe went to work in a hardware store.  It was during this time that he invented a one-man boat-loader, but the world didn't beat a path to his door.  Joe served as County Assessor for Josephine County in Oregon.  He loved to fish and hunt."

Notes for STEPHEN ELMER SHAW:
Born at 1002 E. 8th.

Elmer, as he is called by relatives, and Steve, as he is called by his friends, neighbors, and coworkers in California, worked for many years for Continental Can as a Litho Press Plate and working as a foreman in the litho department.  He retired December 30, 1976.  He and Celia made their home in Hayward, CA.  Steve graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1932 and worked at the Mare Island Navy Yard during World War II.

Notes from Mary Ellen Shaw about her brother, Stephen Elmer Shaw written in 1998.

"Stephen Elmer was outstanding in my mind in the way he used to help Mother when she had to work away from the home during the Depression years.  He worked as a "soda jerk" and in Pittsburg jewelry stores.  He went to LaJunta, CO in April, 1934 to live with Mother's Uncle Lafe (Lafayette) Matzenbacher and his family.  He had various jobs but finally got work with Santa Fe Railroad.  Walking to work, he would pass by Hood's Bakery that was owned by Celia's father.  Elmer noticed the pretty girl who was always arranging the window display as he want by.  (Celia admits she timed her window job deliberately.)  They were married
October 23, 1937 . . . and he was laid off at Santa Fe three months later.  They moved to San Francisco CA, where he worked for Woolworth Stores for two years.  In 1942 he went to work at Mare Island Navy Yard until end of World War II, after which he began work for Continental Can Company where he continued as a lithographer until  retirement in 1976.
